The inverter type decides whether you get backup during power cuts, whether you can use net metering and how much maintenance the system needs.
On-grid (grid-tie) inverters
Convert solar DC to AC and feed it to your loads and the grid. No batteries, lowest cost, net metering possible. They shut down during power cuts for safety.
Off-grid inverters
Work with batteries and do not export to the grid. They provide backup and suit areas with poor grid supply, but batteries add cost and need replacement every few years.
Hybrid inverters
Combine both: export to the grid and backup from batteries. They are the most flexible and the most complex to configure and repair.
Maintenance differences
- On-grid: grid-voltage tripping and isolation faults are the most common issues
- Off-grid: battery charging problems and low-voltage cut-offs dominate
- Hybrid: BMS communication and configuration faults are common
