Rooftop Solar Subsidy in India Guide

24 October 2026 · 7 min read · By Sunce Renewables technical team

Central subsidy is the biggest reason rooftop solar has taken off in Indian homes. The process itself is straightforward if you follow it in the right order — most rejections happen because people install before registering.

How much subsidy is available

  • Residential households: subsidy per kW for systems up to 3 kW under the PM Surya Ghar scheme (amounts are revised — check the current rate on pmsuryaghar.gov.in)
  • The subsidy is capped for larger systems above 3 kW
  • Only grid-connected systems with a valid net meter qualify
  • The subsidy is paid directly to your bank account, not to the installer

Golden rules before you install

  • Register on the national portal BEFORE installation — installations before registration are not eligible
  • Use a registered/approved vendor in your state
  • Your electricity connection must be in your name
  • Apply for the net meter at the same time as the plant

Step-by-step process

  • 1. Register on the PM Surya Ghar portal with your discom/consumer number
  • 2. Get a technical feasibility approval from your discom
  • 3. Install through an approved vendor
  • 4. Apply for net metering after installation
  • 5. Get the plant commissioned and inspection done
  • 6. Upload documents and commissioning certificate on the portal
  • 7. Subsidy is credited to your registered bank account

Common mistakes that delay the subsidy

Installing before registering, mismatched names on the connection and application, missing the commissioning certificate, or choosing an installer who has not completed previous projects on the portal. Choose the installer carefully — they handle most of the portal work.

Frequently asked questions

Is subsidy available for commercial installations?

No. The PM Surya Ghar residential subsidy applies to households. Commercial and industrial plants are evaluated on payback and policy benefits instead.

Can I claim subsidy on a 10-year-old solar plant?

No. Subsidy applies to new grid-connected rooftop systems registered under the current scheme, not to existing plants.
