Solar Inverter Warranty Explained

22 October 2026 · 5 min read · By Sunce Renewables technical team

Most string inverters in India carry a standard 5-year product warranty, extendable to 10 or 20 years on many brands. But the warranty only protects you if you understand what it covers — and what can void it.

Product vs performance warranty

  • Product warranty covers defects and failures of the inverter itself
  • Performance warranty guarantees minimum conversion efficiency over the years
  • Extensions usually add to the product warranty, sometimes at extra cost at time of purchase

What typically voids a warranty

  • Opening the inverter or breaking the manufacturer's seal
  • Repair by an unauthorised party
  • Incorrect installation — wrong earthing, undersized cables, unstable grid
  • Damage from lightning or surges where surge protection was not provided
  • Using the inverter outside its rated conditions

Once the warranty ends

Out-of-warranty is where independent repair makes the biggest difference. Component-level repair of the failed board costs a fraction of a new inverter and gets your plant generating again quickly — the same work is often not offered by the manufacturer's service channel once the unit is out of warranty.

Frequently asked questions

Can an out-of-warranty solar inverter be repaired?

Yes, and it is usually very economical. Component-level repair restores the inverter at a fraction of replacement cost, even for models with no spare parts available.
