How a Solar Inverter Works

Solar panels produce DC (direct current) electricity, but your home and the grid run on AC (alternating current). The solar inverter is the device in between — and it does far more than convert. It is the brain of your entire solar system.

Step 1: Converting DC to AC

Panels send DC power to the inverter. Using high-speed switching electronics (IGBTs and MOSFETs), the inverter turns it into clean AC electricity at the same voltage and frequency as the grid — 230V, 50Hz in India — so it can run your appliances directly.

Step 2: MPPT — extracting maximum power

Panel output changes with sunlight, temperature and shade. The inverter's MPPT (Maximum Power Point Tracking) continuously adjusts the operating voltage so it always pulls the maximum possible power from the panels, even in partial shade or on cloudy days.

Step 3: Grid synchronisation & safety

Before exporting power, the inverter matches the grid's voltage, frequency and phase exactly. It also constantly monitors the grid — if the grid fails, voltage goes out of range or frequency drifts, the inverter shuts down within milliseconds (anti-islanding) to protect line workers.

Step 4: Monitoring & reporting

Every few seconds the inverter logs generation, voltage, current and temperature, then sends the data to your monitoring app. This is why most 'solar inverter not working' complaints are first noticed in the app — the monitoring is doing its job.

Why this matters for repairs

  • Any of these four functions failing = a fault — conversion, MPPT, grid sync or monitoring
  • Grid-related faults (voltage/frequency) are often site issues, not inverter defects
  • MPPT and power-stage problems need component-level PCB repair
  • Firmware/software issues can often be fixed without opening the inverter

Frequently asked questions

Can a solar inverter work without a battery?

Yes. On-grid (string) inverters work without batteries — they feed power directly to your loads and the grid. Batteries are only needed for off-grid or hybrid systems.

Does a solar inverter work at night?

No. There is no solar input at night, so an on-grid inverter stays off. Your home draws from the grid (or from batteries in a hybrid system).
